How to Clean a Breast Pump – Safe & Complete Guide
Keeping your breast pump clean is essential for your baby’s safety and your pump’s longevity. This guide explains how to clean a wearable breast pump properly after every use.
What You’ll Need
- Warm water and dish soap
- A dedicated clean brush for pump parts
- A clean drying rack or paper towels
- Optional: Steam sterilizer bags or a microwave sterilizer
After Each Pumping Session
- Disassemble the pump completely: separate the flange, valve, diaphragm, and milk container.
- Rinse all parts that came into contact with breast milk under cool running water first.
- Wash all milk-contact parts in warm soapy water using a dedicated brush.
- Rinse thoroughly under running water until all soap is gone.
- Air dry on a clean drying rack — do not use cloth towels as they can harbor bacteria.
Deep Cleaning (Once a Day)
- After the regular wash, use a steam sterilizer bag in the microwave for 2 minutes.
- Or boil parts in water for 5 minutes on the stovetop.
- Allow to cool before reassembling.
Dishwasher Safe?
Yes! Yuemi breast pump parts are dishwasher-safe. Place them on the top rack only, in a mesh laundry bag or dedicated dishwasher basket. Use a heated drying cycle.
What NOT to Clean with Breast Pump
- Do not clean the motor/pump unit with water — wipe with a clean damp cloth only.
- Do not use bleach or harsh chemical cleaners.
- Do not microwave parts that are not labeled microwave-safe.
